The lens is communicating the difference in stops between the
wide-open aperture and the exposure aperture.
The ACTUAL aperture is not known to the body, only that the lens is
stopped down N stops.
That's why the OM with focus confirmation (I forget which model, one
of the double-digit ones) requires a switch on the body for you to set
the approximate wide-open aperture of the lens.
