I would buy a brand new OM1 or 2 today for $400/$450 respectively

 Yes

Sure, but realistically speaking, it wouldn't need to be much larger, look
at the Pentax example.

System compatibility and basic control layout (sorry, that's two)

I would buy a new OM4Ti (without the really useless Ti) for $750 immediately
(Show of hands please, anyone abuse their OM4Ti in a manor that would have
broken an OM2n's body in two? If the Ti is so damn expensive you're afraid to
put it at risk what possible rational is there for the tougher Ti?) I'm not
really in the market for a Canon EOS 1n or Nikon F4/5 class camera and suspect
few amateurs would be willing to spring for $1500 to $2500 bodies. Pros need
autofocus and modern design lenses to compete and make money. This may be a
bridge too far for a stumbling Olympus corporation.

Contrary to some of my fun poking earlier, I think the OM2000 with lens kit
for about 300 bucks is actually a pretty good deal. The marketplace seems to
agree as Olympus seems to be selling a fair number. I hope the lesson
learned by Olympus is something about supply/demand/price/profit curves as in
lower your damned prices and make more money!
