Frank,

I have tried this stacking lens technique several times recently. I
rather like it. I bought two 49 - 52mm step up rings and then used
sellotape to fasten them together 52-52 ends. This gives you a
double-ended 49mm fliter thread.

I then used a 50mm f/1.4 reversed onto a 135mm f/3.5. This gives roughly
2.7 times magnification (50/135). I tried it with a 50mm f/3.5 macro
reversed onto it, but this displayed bad vignetting in the view finder.
You could get rid of the vignetting by adding more extension behind the
135mm lens.

The beauty of this set up is that it is cheap and also you can use the
prime lens to control DOF, exposure etc. Just leave the reversed lens
wide open. For illumination I used a T32 attached to a curly .6m
cord and fired it in from the side. This gives a lovely glancing sideways
light which puts texture into your subject. You could use two flashes at
45 degrees on a macro bracket too. No double cables are needed and its
super sharp. However, DOF is critical and you need to be sqaure on to
your subject to get it all in focus. Its excellent for photographing
coins and butterflies wings (med flies too, I suspect Hank).

Play around with various combos. I'd like to try a 50mm reversed onto a
200mm for 4x mag but I haven't got a). a 200mm and b). a 55mm filter
threaded standard lens.

Regards

John.
