John Shaw says in his book (have an 87 edition) that one needs to keep the
reversed lens wide open.
The prime lens is the one which needs to be stopped down.

My only experience with macrophotography has been by use of close-up
lenses. I had not looked at Shaw's book in ages. Since I do have a
200mm/5 and a 50mm/1.8, I will experiment on this combination to see how it
would be like. Shaw suggests to pick a faster lens to be reversed. This
would give me a different perspective on things I work with, and I look
forward to the next warm winter day in Baltimore to try it.
