While in my EL (sorry) the info is gained by the simple fact the f/ring is
to be set at 5.6 if you want to mount the lens. 

In the AI lenses the info is gained by the camera, asfaik, by the "s" mark
on the flange of the mount of the lens. Anyway in all AI lenses you can
read the f/ value directly from the lens thru the viewfinder!
