Gareth,

It might not be as bad as you think - if you have been leaving the flash
switched on then there will be a tell tale light in the viewfinder which
lights when the flash is ready, and flashes when exposure is correct.

If you leave the flash switched on for long periods whilst connected to the
camera - the camera batteries get gobbled because of this light!

Hope it's that simple for you to fix.....
