I find myself in a rare disagreement with Larry here. My impression
is that the aftermarket prime lenses in general, including the wide
angles, are a much safer bet than any of their zoom lenses. The
reason for this is actually quite simple: most prime lenses are
much easier to design than the zooms.

Only serious amateurs and professionals buy prime lenses anyway, so this
market is rather small to begin with, and profit margins only exist on
the margins, namely, super-wide angles, and fast long telephotos. Hence,
most 3-rd party lens manufacturers stopped offerring standard prime lens
fare. However, many of their past crop are, IMHO, well worth seeking out.

If anyone's interested, I'll be happy to compile and post a small list
of 3-rd party prime lenses I had positive experiences with. Other
Olympians may want to contribute their own positive/negative impressions.

Cheers,
