But for max opening, the f/ settings of this lens are fixed, too. You can
easily see how much the diaphragm corrects the variation of focal lenght.
Thus you can safely use it with Velvia in normal-auto flash mode. 

I believe it is a 9 elements in 8 groups. Posterior element, as you can
see, is fixed. There are also PF and AF clones. In a recent thread, was
considered of equal quality as the f/4, but less than the f/3.6. It is more
plastic-made than the its senior brothers, but very much smaller and in a
way a real "normal" zoom lens, that is a lens that works on your camera
everyday. I agree with you there is no gain in paying much more for a f/4.
For the f/3.6 maybe it is.
