Yes, don't use flash mounted on camera!  The flash light will reflect off
the smoke.  Use back or side-lighting techniques.

A question... Why are you using the flash?  By using the flash you are
destroying the special lighting/smoke effects used in the scene.  I have
almost always gone with a faster film and used ambient lighting.  The stage
lights are typically bright enough to get decent exposures if you meter off
the lit object and not the entire scene.  If you have a single person in a
spotlight and the rest of the stage is dark, you will need to spot meter
the person or else they will turn into a ghost.

If you are shooting at a touring band concert, you can ask the lighting
person to give you a Video setup.  Video setups are higher power settings
and have more fill lighting to reduce contrast.  With their computerized
controllers, if they have done this before, all they have to do is "punch
up" the settings.
