Actually, Hg batteries were banned because it was feared that Hg
may contaminate river and sea waters. The danger was not in drinking
Hg-polluted water, but in eating fish. Human body can dispose of
small quantities of Hg, but fish accumulate it in concentrations
that can potentially be lethal to humans.

Btw, the Japanese whose diet contains lots of seafood, were at the
forefront of the Hg battery ban. The most amazing thing is that
this ban was planned since the mid-70's, and has been in place for
over 10 years now, and we still don't have a substitute that can
compare to the original Hg PX625's.
