Well, it's no longer a "rumour" -- Varta is indeed discontinuing the
production of the PX625-equivalent battery at the end of 1998.  Here's a
portion of the e-mail message I received from the Varta folks:

"Dear Mr. Wood,

unfortunately it is true that Varta will stop the production of mercury 
batteries to the end of 1998. After this time no manufacture is any 
longer allowed to produce and sell those batteries because of the 
damage to the environment. Sorry that I can not give you a much more 
positive answer.

Guess that about does it.  Looks like that adapter for older OMs is gonna
start selling even better soon...
