While we are on the subject, I am more worried about the cadmium
in nickel cadmium batteries. Cadmium and its salts are highly toxic.
It can leach out of discarded batteries
to pollute ground water. IMHO, considering the numbers of NiCd
batteries in use today, and the toxicity of Cadmium, some sort of return
for deposit arrangement should be set up by governments to encourage
recovery of cadmium.

Perhaps that day will never come. In the meantime, some University
Radiation departments will take the old NiCds and safely dispose of
them.

Cadmium was implicated as a causative agent in in Itai-Itai disease
in Japan. It is also a possible carcinogen. I've seen many old NiCd
cells leaking cadmium salts.

If there are any "policy-wonks" out there following this list--Please
make an issue out of this!

BTW, I'm looking for a job as a biological science research
technician. If you know of anyone who might need a technician
with my skills (see resume on my home page) please let me know.
