Would this be the Vivitar Series 1 28-85mm varifocal lens - excellent
piece of glass but a tad bulky and heavy to make a good match for the
Olympus bodies. I seem to recall that it was f/2.8-3.5, though I got
rid of mine a few years ago.

The aperture ring is a little close to the shutter speed ring of Olympus
cameras and difficult to adjust without changing speed. One solution is
to get two clear plastic 'cable-ties' from the local hardware shop and
feed the tail of each onto the eye of the other to form a large loop.
Slip that over the lens mount and tighten the wraps around the aperture
dial. A bit of care will turn the eyes of the cable-ties into two easy
grip holders at 180deg around the aperture dial, and if you made sure to
use transparent cable ties you will still be able to read the aperture
settings through it.

WARNING!!!!
If you intend to use this lens on an OM-4 or 4Ti be careful to check
that it has THREE screws and one blank screw head on the lens mount
otherwise you will be saying goodbye to spot metering!!

Vivitar used to do a free conversion to their lens mounts when the OM-4
first appeared. You could fill the offending screw head with epoxy as a
home made fix, though I would worry that this would eventually fall out
unnoticed causing damage next time the lens was fitted.
