Hi Tristan,
funny you should come up with this right now because just 3 hours ago I
bought a soft bag.
Two weeks from now, I'll be day-hiking on some popular mediterranean
Island (yes, I am counting the days to escape from the cold drizzle of
the northern German plains) and didn't want to carry a camera*case*
around with me. So I was looking for some rucksack-style affair to take
with me. But all that the photo-shops could come up with, were rather
huge bags at prices I'd very much prefer to buy another lens for (e.g.
Loewe's day pack would make you some $166 poorer over here).
In the end I found this 'camera-insert' ($22) for a day-pack in just
another 'outdoor'-shop. The brand name is 'tatonka' (Item-#:5815.040),
which I gather to be, what once used to sell as 'jan-sport'. No
difference though, they all come from Vietnam meanwhile.
It's sort of brick-shaped (30*28*10cm, read 12"*11"*4"), padded on all
sides and the entire interior is lined with velcro (loop-side), to which
the flaps(?) of the separators will stick (hook-side). This way, the
distribution of internal compartments is completely up to you. It's
large enough to take all the essentials (body, 4 lenses, flash and small
stuff), though we might argue what actually is essential. I like the
idea of being able to put it into whatever day-pack, suitcase or
watertight box it will fit into.
All in all it looks decently made and worth the money (global economy
does have its merits too).
Hope this helps,
Soenke in (foggy) Hamburg

P.S.

'Beyond infinity' sounds like a good theme for a Ph.D.-thesis in
theoretical mathematics.
