[snip discussion about bogen hex plate interfering with OM and vibration in
Carbon-fiber tripods, etc.]

I have two bogen tripods the 3001 and 3021 with the superball head and the
big 3-way head. It is oh so very true that they interfer with good OM
operations. Especially with a 35-shift.

Bogen/manfrotto bases are among the best anywhere. The 3021 is an
extremely solid tripod that I've even climbed on (200+ pounds). The 3021
is terriific for "American Car-Trunk Photography." I definitely will not
carry this one very far without a pack-mule.

The 3001 is much better and with the ball head, a lot less conflict with
the OM's. The bracket the hex plate fits into is much smaller and doesn't
stick out for an inch on the sides. You might beable to work the 300/4.5
with it. (I've rotated the plate 45 degrees to get complete freedom of
lens movement with the ball head.)

Vibration? Denton's vibration description is very accurate. I've taken
the 3021 and photographed a lighthouse (Grand Haven Michigan) in a 45 mph
(gusting 60 mph) wind using a 400/5.6 lens and a 600/8 mirror lens. I was
using a car to block as much wind as possible but the wind coming under the
car would cause the tripod to "buzz" and "walk" across the pavement. It
wasn't until I hung my camera bag on the tripod and fully splayed the legs
out that I could keep the oufit from moving. My exposures were in the 1-2
second range (post sunset sky). Out of two rolls of film, I got 8 sharp,
usable shots. The biggest problem was the aerodynamics of the 400 lens--it
wanted to fly away. Anything less than the 3021 would have made this shot
impossible. I had the 3way head tightened up pretty good.

Anyway, keep the bogan tripod, just replace the head. The Arco ball head
is probably one of the finest you can get anywhere.
