I placed the word "purists" in quotes because some would
remain zoom-free to the point of impracticality. There is
some sarcasm implied there. :-) The modern lens design era
is considered by some to have begun around the late 1970's
to early 1980's, which is when many of the current and near
current Zuiko lenses were introduced.

I have produced extremely sharp 8x10 images with my old
35-70/3.6 which were indistinguishable in quality from
images made with my 90/2 in the same photo sessions. I know
at least one pro who claims he produces tack sharp 11x14
images with the same lens reguarly. Depending on one's
level of quality acceptance (and one's eyesight), it is
arguable that one can produce sharp images with a zoom at
even higher enlargements compared with a fixed lens of
similar quality construction. I have seen images in
magazines and books produced with the 28-48/4, the 65-200/4,
and the 50-250 as well as the 35-70/3.6.

It is arguable that one can produce serious work with many
zooms as long as one doesn't blow the resultant images to
the point where the inferior contrast---compared to fixed
lenses of similar quality construction---begins to show.
