"It's not exactly an OM-1, but ..." Pop Photo

Just got my latest issue (April 98) of Popular Photography last nite. One of the
front tag lines is: "Can a budget-priced SLR be this good?" The SLR referred
to
is the OM-2000!

There's a review of the 2000 inside which is flattering. One point they make is
that it's chassis is "as beautifully made and durable as those found in many a
posh pro SLR." One strange thing: Pop thought the chassis to be all-metal.
They
called Olympus, Tokyo to confirm. Olympus said, No, it's a hybrid chassis. Pop
was skeptical and took the camera apart and found that it IS all-metal.

They also mentioned that it's Cosina-made cousins include the Nikon FM-10, Rikoh
KR-5 and the Canon T-60.

As for performance, they found the spot meter not as narrow as on the 3/4. And
they found that the exposure system provided "a very high percentage of
accurate
exposures under a wide variety of shooting conditions." Also, the viewfinder
provides the following exposure data: green LED on alone = correct exposure;
green and plus LEDs on = +1/3 stop; plus LED only = + 1 stop or more
overexposure. Ditto the minus LED.
The viewfinder had the highest magnification (0.94x) of any OM camera, they
said.

In addition, the new Zuiko-S 35-70 was tested and on the opposite page is a test
of the Nikon 70-180 f/4.5 - 5.6 AF. It was a kick to see that the Zuikos' SQF
numbers were better than the Nikons'! (I know it's apples to oranges, but I
like
it anyway.) The lens actually looks real good, especially for the $$ they sell
for. From the data and writeup, looks like it's best to stop down to f/8 or
more
for best performance.

Sounds to me the 2000 + 35-70 is a great package to augment an OM system,
especially as it adds a capability not found in any other OM camera: multiple
exposure.

Hope all those who grabbed a 2000 early are enjoying them.
