They are not trying to increase demand. They are trying to decrease
demand. It's unprofitable and they will exit.
This is identical to what Nikon has done with their manual focus products,
although Nikon has done it more slowly.
I would predict that Olympus exits manufacturing SLRs within two years.
Point and shoot and digital will be the primary camera products for Olympus.
I've said this before, but I don't think this is a terrible thing, although
it is sad. I use a forty year old Rollei TLR and a twenty year old Olympus
rangefinder and no-one seems to notice in my photographs. (I do use modern
cameras too, although not as often, a Fuji 6x9 rangefinder and a Konica
Hexar.) I know people who still use Konica SLRs and are happy.
I am getting out of the OM system, but not to switch to a competitor. I'm
doing most of my work in medium format now, and I need a camera with good
macro capabilities in medium format, which Olympus doesn't make.
