The DOF issue is pretty much meaningless.  Even though it is technically
true that all focal lengths yeild similar DOF at a given subject size, in
actual practice the DOF is different because you will rarely actually
photograph the same subject in the same composition using two different
focal lengths.  

Focal length has little to do with the subject and everything to do with
the background.

I didn't know flowers grew in caves.  Using flash to lower background light
level can result in "cave" shots.  Very unflattering.  When I do use flash
for macro work, I typically use a small studio umbrella to reflect into and
wrap the flash around the subject and into the background.
