I've had found some embarrassingly good deals. Once at a garage sale,
there was a box marked "cam stuff". I looked in and there was a Zuiko
50/3.5 macro and bellows, both like new. I asked the owner how much for
the stuff, he looked into it, and said $20. I didn't argue. I sold both of
those to a friend for $100, and he's still grinning.
Two weeks ago, I was at another garage sale, and there was this huge
Tamrac bag (second largest) in like new cond. I looked at the tag, and
thought it said 150.00. The man saw me backing away and said "Hey ! if
fifteen is too much, how about $12 ? He'd used it on a trip to Europe and
bought a much smaller bag.
I'll stop there, because it IS embarrassing at times. My friend to whom
I sold the 50/3.5 + bellows ran into a bag at a garage sale with an
OM -1, OM-2 and one Winder I, plus 28/2.8, 35/2.0, 50/1.8,
100/2.8 and 200/4.0. He asked the owner how much, and the man complained
about how heavy all those old cameras were, and how his new zoom autofocus
put them to shame, and he would want no less than $75...
I once bought a new-in-the-box Winder two for $10. The woman said "It
was a gift, but why would anyone put such a big, heavy thing on a nice,
light camera like an OM-2 ?". She had a point, and I have that Winder II.
I could mention the 1930's Rollei for $80 in great shape, or the 64xxxx
Nikon F with 50-300/4.5 Nikkor (with one of those monster pie-plate sized
filters) for $275.00...
OK, OK, I'll stop NOW...but I should say that the garage sales mean
giving up morning light on saturdays, and some months you go & go without
finding any camera stuff. But you usually find something (I've a box of
things that I've been meaning to shoot still lifes of) that makes the trip
worthwhile, and one learns a lot about people, what they are willing to
part with, what they value and the end point of the consumer chain.
