Hi Joel:

<< We start with zooms to get the bang for the buck and then move up to primes
when we start using tripods and other good habits more seriously. >>

Unless we grew into photography in the age when zooms weren't too good or too
expensive. Then we learned the craft with primes and got zooms when we were
financially more secure or successful. If we are really old timers, we even
learned the craft without built-in light meters! I'm only 43, but my first
cameras were mid-1950's era Canon IV-S2 and Vt's (Leica-like rangefinders). I
remember my 15 year old friends throwing me into a Canadian lake with a Weston
meter around my neck. It killed the meter and I had to rely on my memory of
prior lighting conditions and their correct exposures. I read that Henri
Cartier-Bresson did the same and felt proud for it. I think those meter-less
years taught me a lot! Especially when I tried to print those negs in a
bedroom darkroom.
