For 20 quid you can't really go wrong Paul. I was in a similar quandary
about 5 or 6 years ago when my OM-1 jammed. The quote for repair was
about the same as a used OM-1, so I figured I had nothing to lose in
delving in myself. As it was, I never found anything obviously at fault
other than a torn film sprocket in the mechanism, but that didn't appear
to be interfering with its operation. When I gave up and put it back
together the fault had gone - and it has worked perfectly eveer since.

I agree with your diagnosis and can't see it being possible for the
circuit to give this type of completely intermittent fault - there must
either be something consistent to cause the electronics to fail or it is
an electro-mechanical fault. I would consider 20 quid a good investment
just to have the opportunity to strip an OM-2 down and attempt the
repair myself. If you fix it, its a bonus if you don't you haven't lost
much.

20 quid - thats less than a night on Guinness! You'll get several
nights of enjoyment cleaning up the contacts and magnets and an
everlasting sense of satisfaction if you are successful.
