Hi Tom:

The amount of "press" an item gets here doesn't mean anything on its
desirability or usefullness to a task. I wrote about the 50 f/2.0 Macro Zuiko
a bit over a week ago when I compared it to other f/1.7 to 2.0 lenses tested
by Popular Photography in the 1970-80s, including the Leitz 50mm Summicron-R.
The Zuiko ranks among the sharpest of lenses for the 35 mm format, but so does
the 90 mm. (That was the subject of a debate in a recent rec.photo newgroup
thread).

The 135mm f/4.5 Zuiko is specifically designed for large insect photography,
given it's push-pull focusing with the Telescoping Auto Tube. That results in
less detectable movement from the insects point of view. The helical focusing
of the 90 mm would 1) be more threatening and 2) force a closer working
distance. The 50 mm is actually 40 mm at 1:2 magnification ratio, so your
working distance is very short. I've generally not been able to hold insects
to their place when attempting to shoot them on a flower with the 50 mm.
