According to what an Oly collector/seller at a Photo swap meet told me,
your latter supposition is true. Evidently, they set up a line and do a
production run of a particular lens, stock the warehouse, and then do
something else. He told me that a lot of the Oly production is contracted
out using their equipement, dies, etc. I don't know if he knew what he was
talking about.
