The FAQ is right and Kennedy is not (mostly)

Well, to explain.
My early OM2 (production pre '78) did exhibit described behaviour.
If the switch was on the FP the hot show was as well. I've read
somewhere at the time that is not the case and quite sure of myself
(was 18 at the time) proceeded to ruin quite a few rolls of film at
my uncle's wedding. He actually noticed the position of the switch
and I said :"Naah, it does not matter, The hot shoe is always in X."
Boy was I embarrassed.
So now I know!
(About the wedding, there were other people with more sense then
myself who were also taking photographs, luckily)

So actually Kennedy is not wrong in the techical part but in the
part with his assumptions.

cheers
