I think this is a bit of an overgeneralization regarding Nikon
lens compatibility.  Also, the marketplace hasn't exactly punished
Canon for changing lens mounts :-)

Or the third possibility:  sometimes you get a broken Nikon.

There's a practical reason for changing the lens mounts on those
non-AI lenses.

Anyway, Olympus has already demonstrated the ability to manufacture
an autofocus SLR which is also compatible with the existing line of
manual focus lenses.  Given the success of _that_ enterprise, maybe
changing lens mounts wouldn't be such a bad idea...
