Not so fast!
Speed is the last thing I would be concerned about when selecting a
film scanner. Picture quality, that's the main issue here. And for that
matter, the ES-10 doesn't even come close to the CoolScan. A recent
test in the Dutch magazine Focus compared six scanners in the range
$500-$1000. Numero Uno - the CoolScan. Second best - Minolta's
QuickScan 35. Last in line - the ES-10. The nicest thing they had to
say about the ES-10 was the price reduction. The CoolScan was the only
scanner that had enough colour depth to let you manipulate contrast and
brightness without loss in quality. The QuickScan came very close.
These two were also the only scanners that let you blow up parts of the
negative or slide and create a quality A4 print from it; also the only
two suggested for professional applications.  So that's still a LONG
way to go for OLY, sadly but true.
