Thanks, Frank. Your reply made me reconsider my OM-3/4 viewfinder
calibration techniques, and I guess I have done it wrong - untill
yesterday evening.
What I used to do was insert a 1-12 screen, turn on he camera, hold it
against light w/o lens, and adjust the viewfinder diopter untill both
the cross-hairs and the meter symbols were as sharp and distinct as
possible. Appearently this doesn't work well for me. It probably
allowed my eye to 'drift away' - focus on a different plane - and then
adjust the diopter untill it came in focus, or something like that.
What I did yesterday was a different approach. It was some reversed
engineering. I inserted a 1-13 screen in the OM-2n, and focused on a
subject at a distance of about 1 meter, using a 70-210 Angenieux tele
macro zoom @ 210. I focused it on a vertical line using the split
image; this provided me a definition of the focal setting that could
not be misinterpreted. Then I attached the Varimagnifinder @ 2.5x,
calibrated it until the subject was as sharp as possible, and marked
the setting on the Vmf using white correction fluid; this allowed me to
make sure I could use this setting on the OM-3/4 (and also in the
future!) too.
After this I mounted the 1-13 (found some use for this screen after
all) in the OM-4, and focused on the same subject, w/o Vmf. Then I
attached the Vmf @ 2.5x (yes, the image became blurred), and adjusted
the OM-4's viewfinder diopter. The subject came into focus! More than
that, the 1.2x setting and the image w/o Vmf remained sharp! This
worked for the OM-3 too, so there was nothing wrong after all, except
for the 3/4 diopter settings. I didn't try this at all with the 300/4.5
test setting I described in my original mail, because I was so
convinced the 3/4 diopters were set correctly. Appearently the Vmf @
2.5x is extremely sensitive for incorrect diopter settings.
If only the OM-3/4 AND Varimagnifinder diopters had a dioptric scale or
at least zero correction markers - that would have helped me lot, since
I am shortsighted but wear contacts all the time when I use the
camera's and don't need corrections.
