I take the batteries out by using small screw driver when I do not use it
for the extended period of time.  It was a pain for me when I first used
the winder, but I got used to it.  Also, those plastic 'sleeves', I believe,
are for holding down the batteries so that they don't pop out.

Also, I was told by a technician at Photosphere of Dallas that if you don't
use the winder don't leave the batteries in the case.   The same is true for
the T-32 flash battery case.  They do worp from the tension of the springs
that are holing the batteries.
