Every fall (northern hemisphere) I post a survival guide to winter shooting.
I must pass on one tip regarding summer shooting.

Make sure that if you are using a bug repellent that contains DEET to keep
it off of your hands and even use sweat bands on the wrists to prevent sweat
(containing the repellent) from getting to your hands. DEET will destroy
the rubber focus rings on your lenses. I've seen it do a wonderful job of
dissolving and generally trashing the rubber rings after only a few minutes
of use.

Bring odorless handy-wipes and a small towel to clean the repellent off your
hands before touching any camera equipment. (Even then, make sure you clean
your camera equipment off when you get home. Long term residue will do
further damage).

BTW, Avon's Skin-so-soft works well as an average bug repellent (and doesn't
contain DEET). But for photography in the Boundary Waters of Minnisota, you
might want to use the industrial strength stuff with XXX, TOXIC and maybe a
radiation symbol on it. Those bugs are big enough and mean enough to carry
off small children.
