As I have received a question off-list regarding a Bogen adapter I needed
to put a Bogen swivel and tilt head (3232) on my Cullmann Magic 2, I am
going to touch on the subject one more time.
Because the Magic 2 base (the center column) has a 1/4" diameter screw, I
needed to have a Bogen adapter 3367 (1/4 - 3/8") to accept a Bogen 3232
with a 3/8" diameter screw hole. This means that I can put any Bogen head
on top of my Magic 2. I decided to try my Bogen 3209 head which had been
attached to my Bogen 3205. Sure enough, it fits. The Bogen 3209 is a pan
tilt head and is bulky, but all three handles can come off the pan head,
and you can carry the head and three handles separately from the tripod
base.
I recall that the original poster starting this thread wanted to have a
tripod for hiking, but sturdy enough to steady the OM body and the
300mm/4.5. The Magic 2 can be had for about $100 to $130 in the United
States. The adapter costed me $6.50. The Bogen swivel and tilt 3232 head
(1/2 lb) costed me $14.95. The Bogen 3029 (2 lbs) is $39.95 according to
the Adorama catalog which illustrates the 3029 and other tripods.
The Bogen 3029 head is good up to a medium-format camera and Bogen calls a
few monopods which comes with a 3232 head as heavy-duty. The limit for the
3232 head seems to be the OM-4T on the Winder 2 with the 200mm/5. The
200mm/5 lens is compact and has a weight of 380g. The weight of the
battery-loaded Winder 2 is ca. 400g. Just on the weight basis, to steady
the 300mm telephoto, you will need a Bogen 3029 on a Magic 2, and hang your
backpack on the tripod arm for a counterweight.
A good head will make a difference!
