Potasium Permanganate might impart a purple haze to your coatings!
If it were my lens I'd stick with the Olympus protocol that
John Hermanson posted.

I decided to test it out and purchased a small jar of Pond's
cold cream (original formula). I placed a tiny dab of the white cream
on a
Hoya doubler that had had a dunk in a stream.

I rubbed the material in with my finger and then cleaned it
off with methanol (denatured alcohol) using a cotton tipped
swab.

You'll need the methanol (CH3OH) to get the wax containing
Pond's cold cream off.

The methanol will kill the fungus.

Be careful with methanol as it attacks the brain cells of the
visual system and humans cannot metabolize it. IMHO too little
concern is given to the dangers of breathing methanol fumes!

The ingredients of the Pond's cold cream are:
Mineral Oil, Water, Beeswax, CERESIN, Sodium Borate,
        Fragrance (some aldehyde), Carbomer
These ingredients for the most part seem like good glass cleaners.

I would use this on fungus contaminated microscope
objectives if I were to encounter it.

BTW, I'm looking for a job as a biological science research
technician. If you know of anyone who might need a technician
with my skills (see resume on my home page) please let me know.
