The last part sounds like the Vivitar TX mount -- a one time competitor
to Tamron's Adaptall concept. However, the description of the lens itself
doesn't match my best source on Vivitars -- John Wolf's 1980 book, where
the 400mm TX lens looks like a Tokina RMC 400/f5.6 clone and is MC.

In the same source, Vivitar's fixed mount 400mm lens is actually closer
to BW's above description, but is longer (11.5 in), has a built-in tripod
collar, and is also MC.

In either case, BW's lens sounds like an older model. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
