Hold those memories because the air quality is really poor now. I was just
there on Monday. I resigned myself to shooting graphic foreground
compositions and letting the haze in the canyon give the photo a sense of
depth and just a teasing hint of the canyon that lies beyond. Seemed the best
I could do given that Mt. Humphreys was barely visable. There are very few
days in which the air clears. On a positive note, the crowds were managable
and the resturant fine, with a great view! No OLY equipment in sight.

I gave Velvia a try on some western landscapes. Yuck, horrendous contrast and
oversaturated colors to the vegetation. Exposure latitude was poor: typically
+/- 1/2 stop. However, for cutting through extreme haze, Velvia and a
polarizer are a fine match. I didn't try it at Grand Canyon, but it would
probably help cut the haze a lot.
