Have you ever had the same problem with other long lens? There may be some
problem with your camera's mirror position. I have the experience that the
mirror resting pin off position (but it was very small, I need side by side
compare of two tele shoots to find out the problem). I need to affix a
small piece of tape under the mirror to make perfect focus. This happen to
my 2n and a Nikon FA. If you always use wide and standard with lens
stopping down, you may never aware this.
