Sorry for jumping in here.

I have converted several 6 volt Power Pack-2's. Some have become
radio control devices for my motor drives, but others I have built a 6
volt lead acid gel battery into, fitting neatly in place of the
original 4x1.5volt cell holder. But a caveat is worth mentioning here!

The modeling light bulbs of all macro flashes are very difficult to
replace, so you don't want to blow them. They will have a much longer
lifetime when used with 5-5.5 volts (e.g. from 4 NiCad cells replacing
the 4 alkalines normally giving power) than with 6-6.5 volts of full
alkalines - let be with the 6.9 volts a completely charged lead
battery will give!!!

So when using the lead battery, you should always turn on the modeling
lights for very short periods only - or you should put a 5 or 5.5 volt
limiter in the circuit. Even an adjustable limiter is possible, giving
between 1.5 and 6.3 volts with full batteries.

If you are in the possession of an Olympus macro LSD light set, with
transformer, you could do better, at least when working indoors.
You could use the 6 volt transformer for the LSD lights for the
modeling lights too. The output of these transformers is adjustable
between 0 and 9 volts (the scale going even to 12 volts), so you can
use 5 volts for normal modeling, and for a short time increase the
voltage to 6+ in critical situations. This is exactly what is
recommended when useing the LSD lights too.

Many wall outlet DC converters do the same job. They have a little
switch which sets them e.g. at 4.5 and 6 volts (not in between, I am
afraid). They do a great job, albeit only indoors...
