I've heard this (that one should leave the film in the canisters before
they warm up) and it makes sense to me.

The relative humidity inside the canister should be very low in
comparison to the surrounding air.

The cooling of moisture-laden air is what causes condensation. If you
leave the film in the canister and leave it sealed, you shouldn't see
condensation inside the canister (you will, however see it on the
outside). This is because the high moisture air stays outside, away from
the film. If you take the cover off the canister, you introduce high
moisture air to the inside of the canister, which cools from the cold
film and canister, and will form condensation.

I've never frozen film (I use it fast enough) but I do leave the film in
the canisters after I get it out of the fridge. In those few cases where
I've been in a hurry and have taken the film out of the canisters before
its warmed, I did get condensation on the film.

Hope this makes sense :). This is always a big concern of mine since I
live in Minnesota (10,000 lakes means lots of humidity in the summer :).

Greg

Recently Lee Hawkins told me I was totally wrong in advising people to
remove their frozen film from the cannister to warm up and dry out
before using. His educated comment was to leave it in the can to warm
up. I had never heard of anyone doing this because it keeps the moisture
in the can with the film! An obvious dumb thing to do. However, knowing
Lee is somewhat informed, I telephoned a number of professional
photographers that use frozen, outdated film in their work. We sell to a
bunch of wedding photographers and serious amateurs who buy 50 to 100
rolls from us at a time.

It was unanimous, no one leaves the film in the cannister to warm up.
Most take the film out of the cannister and throw it into their
equipment bag right away to be ready to shoot as the situation dictates.
Most everyone's comment was, does someone actually leave it in the can?
Next time look inside the cannister and see the moisture that collectsd
there.Too bad Lee. OLYMPUS Dude.
