My personal experience is that being in contact with advanced amateur
photographers and having the opportunity of being criticized and to
criticize other's shots, I became more conscious of what's necessary to
compose a nice picture. This doesn't mean that I actually take better
shots, but I can assert that on the average the quality of my pictures
has improved. Now I take several pictures of each subject spending more
time on each. I throw away the owful slides and the insignificant slides
so that the rest is generally nice. The rule (that I don't attend
strictly) is 3 left from 36.
The difficult point of receiving criticisms and suggestions from others
is that one has to maintain his own style following his taste,
sensibility and attitude. 

I think that joining a good "photo-club" is better than attending a
photography class (unless you need particular tuitions).
