Hi Bob,

What makes you think there is something inherent in the photo selection
processes at publications that should make you feel pride or will give you
recognition?

Some processes do, of course, because you discover people who have developed
high standards are involved in decision-making. Most don't, and this latter
category is the growing one as publishing corporations have changed over the
past decade.

It's not the same venue, but I'm reminded of a neighboring photographer at a
street fair recently who was getting a lot of nice comments but no sales while
people spent their money on cheap, dime-a-dozen, functional crafts in
neighboring booths. His conclusion: "True praise is cash." (No, I don't
believe that for a moment, but it is worth reflection in some situations.)

Beyond a few dollars--fewer than for most other kinds of publications--what
does someone get with a front-page photo in a newspaper? What is tougher to
come by, a published photo in a newspaper or a mint 21/2? (Yes, I'm jaded. I
make my living by selling thousands of photos taken by other people to various
kinds of publications each year. I like it, but there is nothing magic or
glorified about it.)
