Most camera shops in Canada still sell mercury batteries from Varta, the German 
manufacturer.  Varta (according to their own people) will stop manufacturing 
mercury batteries at the end of 1998 to step in line with EC environmental 
regulations.  There will probably still be stock available through the first 
half (or so) of 1999.  I tried searching their Website for the Mallory 640 
replacement, but there was no mention of that specific battery.
