Just a clarification, does it defeat it or beat it? I never used a OM 4.

From what I have read on this list so far on the 3 and 5 I may want to
 retire my 1 and 2.

 You people are hurting me!

What the highlight and shadow buttons do is change exposure rather drastically
(several f-stops up or down) so the whites are really white and the blacks are
really black (instead of each being18 0ray). The button is used in
conjunction with the spot meter after the spot meter has been set.
For example: A white rose with any color background. Press shutter half way
to turn meter on. Aim center split image focus ring at rose. Push spot meter
button. Push highlight button. Compose and shoot. If you want to hold the
exposure in your camera just move the little lever at the base of the shutter
release to the right BEFORE releasing the shutter {the viewfinder says `memo'
in the bottom right}. That's the memory! When you're through with that
particular setting or if you want to start over or get out of spot metering,
move that lever to the left. That's reset.

What's really neat about the OM4T is you buy this fantastic 2% averaging spot
meter and they throw in a well machined camera body.
Just a thought.
