If he uses the metered reading to make the exposure, his hand will be 18%
gray. He has to open up(give more exposure) to make the hand appear normal,
one stop lighter than 18 0ray. Anything you point the meter at will give
a reading which will be 18 0ray in the photograph. You have to decide how
you want the object you are metering to be rendered. If you want it to be
lighter or darker than 18 0ray you give it more or less exposure,
respectively. Metering someone with dark skin will give you a reading for
18 0ray rendition. You have to reduce the exposure(usually a stop less
light) to have the skin appear dark in the photo.

Winsor - I guess that the simplest way to do this is to "let more light into
the camera" buy using the compensation dial up plus 1. (or you can switch to
manual and adjust accordingly) - is this correct?
