I prefer matte with split image. I have never found the microprism to
have any value at all, though I can (and do) live with it -- most of my
bodies have 1-13 screens :).

Generally, I like having some sort of focusing aid (split image,
microprism,
or both). I figure if I don't want/need it in a particular situation, I
just
ignore it. I've never used a grid screen - like a lot of people I think
I read
the Oly literature that says "for shift lens", figured I don't have a
shift
lens (yet! <g>) so I shouldn't get one. Similar to using the 1-8 for
astrophotography - while it's good for that, I've found the 1-12 to be
better
(brighter).

BTW - Speaking of the 1-12 screen, does anyone know why at least some
Oly
literature describes this as the "only clear-field screen that provides
accurate meter readings in the finder"? Is this really true (I've never
actually tested it). How is it different from the others? But I ramble.

I just ordered a 2-13 (from John, in fact) and am looking forward to
trying
it. I'm not familiar with the Beattie screens, but the idea of an extra
bright
screen with a split image AND a grid is very appealing to me. (John - I
bet
you wondered when I would get to answering the question!)
