sodium chloride is "salt", and is corrosive to metals....when in contact.
calcium chloride is not corrosive, unless you place directly in contact with
gear. use a plastic vial (film canister) with several holes, and place cotton/
tissue/filter paper between the vial with holes and the dessicant inside of
it: no contact with camera and the dessicant can still absorb moisture. better
yet, just go buy the little packets at the camera shop....they sell it here in
hawaii for camera use. something to consider: bare metal machine parts are
stored and shipped with desicant, as high precision tools are also kept with
desicant. silica gel is used most often because it does not "melt" as it
absorbs more water( calcium chloride tends to do that). Ca Cl is used to
remove water from chemical reactions mostly.
