You say that in auto mode it draws lots of current...do you have a problem
in manual mode?

SO what should I do.

I had been loooking for an OM 2 for a while now, most of the are way too
expensive for me. But recently I bought a cheap OM 2 black body in a pawn
shop. The camera had apparently locked up and no one knew how to unlock it
using the B shutter speed. So I had a quick look at it and found that
the shutter did indeed reset when I used the B speed. But I also noticed
that the batteries were completley flat. I reasoned that this is why the
shutter had locked up, and was probably why it continued to lock when I
fired the shutter in anything other than B.

So the pawn shop knowing nothing about Oly's thought the body was broken and
were going to send it off to get it fixed. Well I thought , if its a
simple batery problem I'll offer them $100AUD for it without them getting it
fixed. They were originally asking $250AUD. After a bit of arguing I
managed to get it for $110. but I had to buy it without warranty. That was
Ok with me because I figured that if there was any problem with it I should
be able to get it fixed during a standard CLA..... And I would definitely
never trust a pawn shops to repair any camera of mine....

The body is black and in nearly mint condition, it's obviously been sitting
in someone closet for a while. The lense is a 50f1.4 Multi coat. It had
a very bent filter on it, but the glass was perfect. The last owner has
never had the lense off as it was spotless inside and no mounting scratches.
I managed to get the filter off and replace it. (Amazing what a pair of
large pliers can do for a filter!!!)

So I get the camera home, and eagerly stick new batteries in it, to be
greeted with ..... Nothing, its still dead.

After a bit of testing I find that in auto mode the batteries are shorted
out, ie the camera draws 300mA. So it looks like there is some sort of
internal short.

Took the body to a local service centre, they say the main circuit is fried,
could cost $250 up to fix.

So :

1. Is this a common problem with and OM 2, I thought dead circuits occured
in 2s's only.
2. If I were able to obtain another junked 2, is it feasible to do a circuit
swap
myself.
3. Would you pay $250 to get this body fixed?
4. What can I do with a dead 2.
5. How does one control the rush of adrenilin when one sees a mint Olympus
for a very low price ....

Oh well your win some and you lose some....

On a different tack, I recently also bought a OM1n that had a sticky
shutter. I took it into a local service place for a CLA, cost me about
$90. After this the shutter speeds were OK, but did not sound right.
The camera was also leaking oil down its main take up spool!!!. I took it
back once for this, and the guy just cleaned it off and said it was OK.
Happened again on the next roll of film. Then to top it off the shutter
would still intermittantly stick in the 1 second speed. I took it to
another service centre (Shutter Box, in Camberwell Melbourne Australia).
They seem to be very capable, and were extremely shocked to see the oil
slick in the body. They also found that the meter was over 2 stops
out!!!!!. No wonder I was getting very thin negs recently.

So hopefully I might get my 1n back in good working order.... It still
cost me more in servicing that I paid for it.....
