In Program mode, set the lens to the smallest aperture.  The camera will set
exposure based on  factory set  combinations of f stop & shutter speed.  From a
service standpoint, I suggest not buying too many 77s (or 707s).
ESP mode uses a cell similar to the one the 4 uses for spot metering.  The
camera compares the reading in the spot area to the rest of the picture.  If it
sees a big difference between the 2 (like backlighting), it employs a factory
set compensation.
