The light source is built-in.  It comes from below the slide, hence is
transmitted light.  As a point light source, it will distinctly show the grain
(from which the image is made up).  So you need a magnification like 30X which
will show enough image to be able to find the same spot on successive slides.

A poor alternative is a 30X pocket microscope with the built in light turned
off.  One would view slides or negs a top a light box.  The contrast on these
optics is very low and the light source isn't point, so the image is fuzzier
than I like.

Also try viewing through a 24 mm Zuiko reversed.

BTW, the 100-150 mm flat field Kodak projection lens is a rather high
performer for the money!
