All my most successful people images have been due to dialogue between the
subject and me. Most are friends, who I choose to ask at an appropriate
time, but I have had some success with strangers. I prefer to photograph
people I know because I wish to be able to make a print of someone known to
me, rather than just a visage that appealed. The image (and its creation)
has greater value because of my relationship with the individual, and is a
product of that relationship. My friends rarely complain when the camera is
produced, and some even pose without being asked. If you are looking to
persuade someone you don't already know, then the best way seems to be a
straight and confident request. Like many other things, practice is the key.
Sneaking one with a long telephoto just makes me feel guilty when they catch
my gaze, and then my cover is blown!
