camera system to fully compete with Nikon F2 and Canon F1. The Oly system
would have the depth of both, but would be considerably smaller and
lighter, which should appeal to just about every kind of pro. At some point
though Oly realized they were not going to join the ranks of C&N, and, with
amateur SLR sales also plunging, threw in the towel.

Wouldn't it be nice to hear from Olympus on all the issues we speculate
about on this list? I wonder out loud if it is possible to get them to
 respond.

I, for one, am very happy that Olympus has NOT joined the ranks of Nikon and
Canon. Would you really like a do everything concrete block of a camera?
They did (do!), IMHO, make a world class camera system. What I don't
understand is the attitude of this group that Oly has "thrown in the towel."
Guess these people think that Lamborgini and Ferrari have "thrown in the
towel" since they didn't try to make a Pinto.
Look at the facts:
Olympus SLR support is fantastic. Better than Canon, much better than Nikon.
I asked about obtaining 625 batteries for my OM1. They sent me two.
I've gotten manuals for half a dozen used OM items...for free... from Olympus.
They even sent me a cover for the flash attachment socket on my OM4T...free.
While I use the OM system, I've purchased P&S cameras for members of my
family: Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Vivitar, Kodak, and, of course, Olympus. Guess
which cameras work better and last longer.....Olympus.
"Thrown in the towel?" NO WAY!
Moved mass production to more profitable areas? Yep.
Note that the digital Olympus cameras get rave reviews.
As do their P&S.
And, I say, the SLR segment is NOT neglected, just selective.
my 2cents.
