future of OM

Olympus reps have indicated to a few people that they lose money on
the OM system, but make lots of money on their point & shoots, and
they keep the OM system alive because it adds prestige to the Olympus
name so snapshooters will think that Olympus makes good cameras and
will purchase their point & shoots.

also, Olympus makes lenses in a single production run. when they design a
new lens, they assemble a production, make as many as they expect to sell
box them up and put them in storage, and then take down the production
facility. I don't know if hte OM-4T is made that way. But it could be
that current Zuikos are in fact being sold off until sold out, and
there will be no more after they are gone. Of course, at the rate at
which people buy them, that could be a long time.

The reason for producing lenses this way is they figure they will update
the design for the next production run if a lens sells alot of copies.
So, there were many different versions of the 50/1.8 for instance.
